Yachtsnet's archive of boat details and pictures

The following information and photographs are displayed as a service to anyone researching yacht types. Details and photographs are normally based on one specific yacht, but could be a compilation. No reliance should be placed on other yachts of the same class being identical.  Where common variations exist, we have endeavoured to indicate this in these archive details.  The price guide covers the normal ranges of age and condition. Exceptional boats, whether good or bad, may fall outside these guidelines.

In the 1970s/80s Colvic was one of the largest moulders of GRP yacht hulls in England, the bare hulls being then sold on both to professional yacht builders, and to DIY home finishers. The Countess 33 is a deep-bodied, beamy, centre cockpit hull, with a choice of a longish fin keel or twin bilge keels. Sailing performance is reasonable, although the boats do tend to be at the 'steady cruiser' end of the spectrum. The deck mouldings were produced with or without an extended pilothouse. The yacht illustrated here is a Countess 35 - a stretched version of the Countess 33 hull, the only significant difference being an extended transom. Because of the very wide standard of fit-out and layouts, prices can vary a great deal, as boats range from immaculately fitted out to quite rough amateur efforts.

The Countess 33 was a 1980 Ian Anderson design for Colvic Craft, who moulded the hulls and decks, and sold them to both amateur builders and a number of boatyards, who finished them under their own names. The Minster 33 and Medway 33 were yard-built versions of the Countess 33 sold under trade names.

Ian Anderson later drew the design for a stretched version to be called the Futura, but only three were built, of which the yacht illustrated here is one. The forward part of the hull is identical to the Countess 33, but the stern has been stretched to elongate the counter. On this yacht a boarding/bathing platform has been fitted into the transom.

The Countess range included a smaller 28, as well as a larger 37. There is a class owners association, although their website does not provide much information about the designs.

She has a two-berth forecabin, with heads compartment separating this from the saloon. In the saloon there is seating forward, with galley to port, by the walk-through to the aft cabin, and the navigation station to starboard

The Countess Futura 35 illustrated was actually an amateur fit-out, but one of the occasional cases you find where an amateur-built boat can be better than a yard-built version, with more care being taken over the details

The galley has twin sinks with good workspace, gimbaled cooker and a front-opening fridge-freezer. Hot water is from an on-demand gas water heater

Normal engine access is via a hatch in the walk-through to the aft cabin, although there are removable panels in the aft cabin and under the companionway to get further access if required

Headroom is good throughout -particularly on the pilothouse version as seen here - 6' 1" to 6' 3" in the saloon, 7' 3" at the galley, 6' 2" under the hatch in the forecabin, and 5' 8" in the aft cabin.

Photographs Yachtsnet

The aft cabin has a double berth 48" deep, and 6' 8" wide at the forward edge, tapering to 5' 3" aft. There is a vanity unit built in, plus lots of lockers

The bilge-keeled Countess Futura 35 illustrated here had slightly deeper keels than standard, with extra ballast and a taller rig
