Although designed by Camper & Nicholson, and fitted out by them on Halmatic mouldings, the Halmatic 8.80 was always sold under the Halmatic name. Thanks to the full-width coachroof forward of the cockpit, she offers a remarkable amount of interior space for her length. The large cockpit is well sheltered behind a fixed windscreen.

Built from 1970 to the early 1980s, the Halmatic 8.80 was very much a motor-sailer, with a powerful Perkins or Watermota diesel. Built to a fairly high quality by Halmatic and Camper & Nicholson, they now offer a lot of space for the money.

The design was altered from Mk I to Mk II in the early 70s, with a slight alteration to the deck moulding, and less interior varnishwork to give a lighter interior, and again altered slightly, with a little more sail area, to become the Halmatic 8.805 in 1978

The blue hulled yacht illustrated here is a Mk I version, other photos show a grey hulled Mk II version. The earlier boats mostly had more varnished woodwork inside, later boats often had lighter interiors

The saloon is spacious for a 28-footer, with a dinette convertible to a double berth to port. To starboard is the galley and chart table, with a quarter berth available under the chart table if required. Access to the engine is via a lift-out panel in the worktop shelf by the companionway, or for more major work, by unscrewing panels in the cockpit bridgedeck structure

Below:

The heads compartment is the full width of the hull, with a Lavac marine WC fited in a moulded casing to port, and sink and lockers to starboard

A quarter berth runs aft from under the chart table. There are substantial lockers either side of the companionway
Immediate access to the engine under the companionway

The fixed windscreen has a substantial grabrail around the top, necessary as there are no guardwires around the cockpit, and you have to step on the sidedeck to climb out onto the foredeck. Mk II boats have a step moulded in to the side of the coachroof in this area.
