Etap 37S

Etap were a large Belgian company with a variety of products, and have been building yachts since 1970. In 1990 the yacht building division was split off as a separate company, Etap Yachting. In 2008 the Etap yachting division was bought by Dehler, but in 2009 Dehler then became insolvent. Etap briefly restarted as an independent company, but then again ceased trading.

Etaps have always been 'different' - all their boats are unsinkable, with double skins and closed-cell polyurethane foam. This also gives excellent insulation to the interior, minimising condensation. The company makes extensive use of custom aluminium and stainless fabrications produced in-house. Etaps are not cheap, but are very well engineered and built.

In production until the company ceased trading, the Etap 37S is a modern fast cruiser with some unusual but practical design features, and all the high quality engineering that made Etaps different from other production boatbuilders.

There is a double sink in the center of the saloon, a design feature common to some newer Feeling models. Although unusual, it is remarkably practical, giving a handhold and bracing point as you move about the saloon at sea, and allowing the sinks to drain on either tack. Headroom in the aft part of the saloon is 6' 6". The saloon settee berths are each 6' 6" long. The galley worktop area can be extended by taking the cover off the stove, which then becomes a tray/shelf which clips into place between the galley and the sink island. You can of course also use it as a tray to hand food and drinks out into the cockpit!

A vee-double berth is in the forecabin: this is long, but narrow at the bow end. There are two hanging lockers and seating as well as the berth in this cabin.

Aft cabin

The joinery on the yacht illustrated is in cherrywood, and whilst the trim is solid wood, much of the paneling is a high quality and very tough cherrywood finish laminate. An alternative interior finish has light walnut panelling with cherrywood trim.

The Volvo 2030 diesel drives a folding two-bladed prop via a Saildrive leg

Etap 37S

One of the most distinctive features of Etaps is the aluminium toerail section, which splits at bow, stern and midships to form mooring cleats, and incorporates very solid stanchion bases. Another feature common to many Etap models is s removable mainsheet traveler in the cockpit - this can be removed in seconds to free up space in the cockpit when in harbour (In the photos below showing the cockpit whilst the boat is laid up the boom is temporarily secured to the wheel pedestal - this is not how the boat is normally rigged. The photo of the traveler unit is from a different boat, but the one fitted to this 37S is similar)
