Yachtsnet's archive of boat details and pictures

The following information and photographs are displayed as a service to anyone researching yacht types. Details and photographs are normally based on one specific yacht, but could be a compilation. No reliance should be placed on other yachts of the same class being identical.  Where common variations exist, we have endeavoured to indicate this in these archive details.  The price guide covers the normal ranges of age and condition. Exceptional boats, whether good or bad, may fall outside these guidelines.

Introduced in 2002, the Bavaria 38 was designed for Bavaria by J & J Design as an update to their earlier Bavaria 37. She is a modern high-volume cruising yacht built with two optional cabin layouts (two-cabin or three-cabin), two keel options (standard or deep fin) and either in-mast furling or slab reefing mainsails.

'Yachting Monthly' reviewed the design in a boat test in the Dec 2002 issue, reporting that she was "light on the helm and rewarding to sail".

Many of these yachts found their way into charter fleets, or were used by sailing schools, hence there can be a fairly wide variation in prices and condition.

At 40 feet in length, you can have full headroom below whilst maintaining a reasonably low deck profile. The hull is laid up in a mix of chopped strand mat and woven rovings, with PUR-foam cores above the waterline and in the deck moulding. The bow sections have kevlar reinforcement laid into the GRP

The 'two-cabin' layout has two large double sleeping cabins, with the option to use the saloon settee as an extra single berth if required.

The three cabin layout has an additional double berth.

The three-cabin version has a smaller galley, without the 'island' sinks. Apart from this the forward part of the interior is identical on both versions.

The heads compartment is very large, with a separate seat forward, with stowage under the seat, and a large wet locker behind. The yacht illustrated is a two-cabin version, and the heads compartment in the three-cabin version is slightly smaller, and differently laid out. Holding tanks appeared to be standard on these yachts.

The primary engine access is via lifting the companionway steps (photo below), on a gas strut, although further access is also possible if required via the aft cabin. The aft cabin illustrated here is on an 'owners' version - the charter version with two aft cabins has slightly smaller double berths

The standard engine is the Volvo Penta MD2030, with a Saildrive
