The Nereus 40 is a long-distance cruising yacht with a 'Freedom' style unstayed cat ketch rig, designed by Canadian Mark Ellis. She offers a very spacious interior, with very easy handling under sail - both sails are self-tacking, and all sail controls are led back to the cockpit. She has two large double cabins, each with an en-suite heads, and a large saloon and galley. The cockpit has a bimini cover which converts to a full 'camper' style tent.

Mark Ellis Design of Canada is responsible for a number of designs of cat rigged sailboats, notably the 'Nonsuch' designs ranging from 22 to 36 ft in length. Over 1,000 Nonsuch's have been built. The Nereus 40 is a larger ketch-rigged derivative of the Nonsuch design, and just six were built.

In some ways the Nereus 40 resembles one of the Garry Hoyt/Halsey Herreshof designed 'Freedom 40's, of which about a hundred were built. The Nereus 40 is however beamier and heavier than a Freedom 40, and has a much more efficient fin keel and spade rudder than the long shallow keel of the Freedom designs.

The hull is of solid GRP below the waterline, with balsa sandwich above the waterline and in the deck moulding. The interior fit out is of very high quality, and laid out to provide very spacious accommodation for two couples.

The forecabin (two photos above) is a large double cabin, with seating and lots of storage space, and an en-suite heads - see right

The galley is in the passageway through to the saloon seating area, with twin sinks and worktop near midships, and cooker and fridge on the starboard side.

The chart table and a deep quarterberth are aft to starboard. The radar and chartplotter are on a hinged bracket so they can be swung out to be viewable from the helm if required.

The aft cabin (above) is accessed from the companionway, and has an en-suite heads with separate shower compartment, which in turn leads back forward to the saloon.

The Westerbeke diesel is amidships, under the galley sink, with access panels on three sides

The cockpit has a substantial stainless steel framed canvas bimini cover, which can be left in place whilst sailing, and side panels with windows can be added when moored to form a complete cockpit 'camper' tent.

The Freedom rig is based on unstayed masts, in this case of spun aluminium, with a wishbone boom which is angled in such a way as to remove the need for a kicking strap.

Substantial stainless steel davits aft support a 9 ft sailing dinghy as tender

This yacht offers a very spacious and beautifully fitted out interior, with very easy sail handling. She is for sale now as the owners are downsizing.
