This quite exceptional Moody Halberdier is in almost "as new" condition. Over the past two years almost every fixture and fitting has been removed and either renewed or renovated. The renovation was supervised by a surveyor, and she now looks as though she should be at a Boat Show. This yacht should really not be compared with other 1970s boats but with new or near-new boats - for example the Cromarty 36 at £250,000+. She is for sale now as the owner's family are rapidly outgrowing this boat, and he has bought a larger Moody.

Designed by Alan Hill and introduced in 1967, the Halberdier was the first all glass fibre yacht to be built by Moodys. The hulls were moulded to Lloyds certification by Marine Construction Ltd. A total of 29 Moody Halberdiers were built by Moodys between 1967 and 1973. From 1973 onwards bare hulls were available from Marcon, and a few more hulls were completed later by other builders. Most Halberdiers were ketch rigged, though a sloop rig was an option. This yacht is hull no 28 of the 29 built by Moodys.

Although nominally a motor sailer, the Halberdier has genuine sailing performance as well as a semi-enclosed wheelhouse and a powerful engine. She is massively built, and is a true all-weather cruiser, able to make comfortable passages in conditions that keep most other yachts moored in harbour.

The hull, deck, coachroof and cockpit were professionally painted in Awlgrip in 2010
- Awlgrip being the finish of most superyachts, as it is glossier and tougher than gelcoat.

The underwater area has been coated with Coppercoat epoxy antifouling, with a ten year life.

At first glance, seeing the substantial wheelhouse, many take the Halberdier to be a motor-sailer along the lines of the Fishers or similar 50:50 motorsailers. In fact the Halberdier is a surprisingly good pure sailing yacht, that just happens to have a powerful engine and a wheelhouse. These were always expensive boats when new - Halberdiers costing new much more than a Nicholson 38 (another genuine sailing yacht with a wheelhouse), and nearly as much as a Nicholson 43.

Moodys later returned to the concept of "a proper sailing yacht that you could helm while remaining dry" with the Eclipses in 33, 38 and 43 foot versions, and the current Moody 45, which is once again a good sailing yacht despite a substantial deckhouse.

The dinette table has removable fiddles, and the whole table
folds up and slides away on curved legs to open up
the dinette space when a table is not needed.

The original Halberdier layout had two single berths, but during the recent refit
this was changed to a single athwartships berth, retaining the aft heads to starboard
and substantial locker space to port

In 2010 she was re-engined with a new 54 hp Yanmar. Two jobs remain outstanding from the 2010 refit: installing an Aquadrive in place of the existing propshaft coupling, and fitting Eberspacher hot water and fan assisted radiator cabin heating. These jobs are underway at present.

On deck every fitting, plus the toerails and cockpit bulwarks, were removed before painting. The masts were refinished in Awlgrip, and new booms, standing rigging, sails and canvaswork were fitted. New windows were fitted throughout.
