The Countess 28 is a high volume family cruiser with a very spacious interior for her length. She offers similar accommodation and performance to a Westerly Konsort. This very late-built example was epoxied from new, and has been finished to an extremely high standard by the previous owner, reportedly with the assistance of a shipwright. The engine was replaced with a new Beta diesel in 2005. She is for sale now only because of a rapidly growing family.

Keel type

Twin bilge keels with encapsulated ballast and skeg-hung rudder

The Countess 28 was designed in 1979 by Ian Anderson as a comfortable, solid cruising yacht. There are few other 28-footers, even now, with as much interior space. Both fin keel and twin bilge keel versions were produced, though more bilge-keelers than fin-keelers were sold. The bilge keels on Countesses are relatively deep, and give a better sailing performance than you would expect from their high-volume hull.

In the 1970s/80s Colvic was one of the largest moulders of GRP yacht hulls in England, the bare hulls being then sold on both to professional yacht builders, and to DIY home finishers. This particular yacht is one example of the situation occasionally found, where an amateur-finished boat can be better than many factory-fitted boats.

Photographs June 2010

This Countess 28 is both late-built, and has clearly been very well looked after. Despite the dull breezy evening on which these photos were taken, you are seeing the reflection of the mooring buoy in the gloss of the hull in the photo above. She was epoxied from new, has a very good inventory including Eberspacher heating, chartplotter and instruments, and is in absolutely "ready to go" condition. She is for sale only because the present owners family are outgrowing her. If you are looking at Westerly Konsorts or similar yachts, give this Countess consideration as well.....
