Moody 33s have an excellent combination of accommodation
and performance, one of the early boats being taken virtually straight
off the production line and sailed to fourth place in the 1975 AZAB
Race by her designer, Angus Primrose.
All the Moody 33s had wood grain finish formica-type laminate
on the doors, bulkheads and locker panels, with solid wood trim.
This is very hard-wearing and practical, but does not really look
like real wood. On this yacht the original saloon table, which
drops to form a double berth base, has been changed for a smaller
drop-leaf table made in iroko. The original saloon table is still
available if required.

The Moody 33 has probably the biggest heads compartment of any
33-footer - even in comparison with modern production cruisers.
All these boats appear to have had the very practical, if now
rather dated looking, blue laminate on the bulkheads in the heads
compartment.

The accommodation consists of two berths convertible
to a double in the forecabin, a very spacious toilet compartment,
a saloon with dinette convertible to a double berth to starboard,
and the galley opposite to port. The aft cabin is accessible from
the cockpit, with two berths and good locker space.
Inside the blue-canvas cover on the bulkhead aft of the dinette
is the wiring loom, with the circuit switches under the companionway
steps. She was completely rewired in 2001, and shorepower with
RCD fitted.
A fold-down chart table is mounted over the top of the quarterberth,
with the Raymarine SL70 radar display fitted on a neat swiveling
bracket so it can e viewed either from the chart table or cockpit.
The Thornycroft 90 diesel lives under the cockpit sole, with
normal access via a large lifting panel in the forward part of
the cockpit sole. For major work the aft section of the cockpit
sole, on which the binnacle is mounted, can also be removed. Most
Moody 33 yachts appear still to have these original engines, which
is a marinised version of the ultra-long-lived 1.5 litre BMC diesel
used in tractors, cars and post office vans. Although obsolete,
Thornycroft
Engines and many other suppliers can still supply spares for
these engines.
Above: the Moody 33 has the sunken well foredeck that was common
to almost all of the Angus Primrose designed Moodys. It offers
a very secure base from which to handle anchoring
The cockpit is deep and spacious, with modern instruments including
chartplotter mounted under the sprayhood, radar on hinge-out bracket
from the saloon, and wheel-mounted autopilot with handheld remote
control (not shown). The primary winches are self-tailing. Below:
cockpit with cushions in place.
Although not the prettiest boat from the quarter, the Moody
33s sail much better than you would expect, and a good one (as
this example is) offers an amazing amount of serious cruising
boat for the money.
