This 1986 Sadler 34 SE is a shallow fin version, was epoxied from new, and has had new teak seating in the cockpit last year. She has good sails, and a Tinker Tramp inflatable with liferaft kit. She is a one owner boat, being used progressively less in the past few years, and is for sale now only because of the owners age.

Keel type

Shallow iron fin keel with skeg-hung rudder

The Sadler 34 was designed in 1983 by Martin Sadler, as a bigger replacement for the Sadler 32, which was a 1979 design by David Sadler, intended to improve on his earlier Contessa 32 design. With this lineage, the Sadler 34 is inevitably a fast, seaworthy yacht, with vice-free handling.

Over a fourteen year production run about 250 were built, the design being built with a variety of keel options, including options of shallow or deep fin keels, bilge keels or a centreboard.

Although the brochure for the design claimed up to nine berths, (which are there if you really like a crowd) most would now regard this as a boat for four to six at most.

'Yachting Monthly' boat-tested the Sadler 34 design in 1984 (in a Force 7-8) and commented "....We raced at 8 knots or so on a broad reach. With the wind hovering in the low force 7’s, she stormed along in fine style, with an easy pressure and good response on the helm" and "...when the wind rose to the mid-8s, we rolled the jib to No 4 size before coming on the wind .... she was now consistently light and perfectly balanced with a delightful feel" and "..... her motion through the water put one in mind of larger yachts". It may be of significance that the YM editor who reviewed the design subsequently bought one himself!

The Sadler 34 has a double-skin GRP hull moulding, with rigid-cell polyurethane foam filling, producing a stiff, well insulated hull structure, and rendering the yacht unsinkable.

Left: The heads compartment has a moulded sink, with hot and cold water, and shower tap. Opposite the heads is a double hanging locker.

NB: The barometer shown below in the saloon was a gift to the owners, and will be removed on sale. Saloon headroom is 6' 3" by the galley and chart table, a little lower forward.

The wooden panel above the seating on the port side of the saloon, hinges down to form a pilot berth, which the present owners have never used, treating the space under the deck behind it as stowage space. Some Sadler 34s had this arrangement on both sides of the saloon, creating a nominal nine berths.

Above: the galley has twin sinks, with hot water from the engine calorifier or shorepower immersion heater, a deep refrigerated icebox, and good storage and working area. The cooker was recently replaced with new.

Left: The Bukh diesel is original, but is well maintained and runs very well. Bukhs are now one of the few purpose-built small marine diesels, and are generally very smooth and long-lived.

The aft cabin berth was described by the builders as a double, but it is a pretty small odd-shaped double, with the read of the engine casing encroaching on the inboard side. It makes a very spacious 6' 6" long single berth though!

Although she needs some replacements (mainly standing rigging and batteries - perhaps £1,500 at most), this one owner boat has a lot going for her, with new teak in the cockpit, and good sails. Unlike many of these boats, which were popular with sailing schools and often raced, this yacht has only ever been cruised.
