A modern build of a traditional fishing (or smuggling) lugger, this boat has been sailed to the Faeroes and Iceland by her builder. Apart from having a diesel, and modern electronics, she is very traditional indeed, in build and general character, which is unrepentantly working boat rather than yacht.

The hull lines are based on original plans held at the National Maritime Museum ant Greenwich, and the Science Museum, but unlike the originals, she has an external lead ballast keel, plus internal ballast in the form of lead ingots, to meet modern stability requirements (original luggers would have had all internal ballast, often largely consisting of stones from the beach).

The boat could easily be coded for charter work, or for TV or film work.

The original solid-fuel stove, mounted on the starboard side forward, was too powerful, and is being replaced with a smaller Faversham stove

There is one berth to starboard in the forepeak, with sail stowage opposite. The foremast - visible in the photo at right - is keel stepped, whilst the aft mast is stepped on a galvanised frame above the keel, to allow a central propshaft to lie under the mast base.

The keel is 6" x 9" Opepe, an African hardwood, with stem, sternpost deadwood and stem knee of 5" x 9" Opepe, the sections being fastened together with 3/4" riveted copper rod. The frames are of sawn oak, doubled and fastened with 3/8" riveted copper rod. There are also intermediate steamed oak frames.

The clinker planking of the lower hull is Scottish larch, one and a quarter inch for the garboard planks, and one inch above, with the top three planks of thicker oak. The planking is fastened with riveted copper nails and bronze screws.

The bulwarks are mounted on oak and Opepe stanchions, with an oak capping rail. The decks are supported on 3" x 3" Opepe deck beams, with Douglas fir deck planking, caulked and payed. and left bare.

Two Douglas Fir trees, felled in January, before the sap had risen, about to be cut for the solid masts. The bowsprit, outrigger and yards are laminated Douglas Fir.

Above: the forward cargo hatch has a skylight fitted, but is fixed in such a way that the whole hatch top could be removed if required
