Staysail ketch

This ferro ketch was professionally built, and when new was exhibited at the 1980 Southampton Boat Show. She is a serious passage-maker in very good order, that can be cruised or left afloat long term without worries about damage to the hull from rust (steel), osmosis (GRP) or rot (timber). After a long period of cruising, including transatlantic passages, in her previous ownership, she had a major refit in 2005-7. She has been well looked after, and has also now been rewired throughout, and has some recent new equipment.

Ferrocement construction's reputation has been badly affected by some very poorly built amateur construction efforts. Done properly, as in this case, it produces an immensely strong hull no heavier than a yacht of similar strength in steel or GRP, and probably with less long-term maintenance problems than either.

Photographs August 2008

MacAlister Carvall were based in Lymington in the 1970s and early 80s, building a range of boats in ferrocement. Whilst most of the boats they built were fishing boats, they did build a number of yachts.

Professionally built ferrocement boats virtually ceased to be built in the 1980s, as the advantages of very high strength and low long-term maintenance from relatively cheap materials was outweighed by high labour costs. It was the labour-intensive nature of the build process that ended most ferro construction, not any defect in the material itself.

In recent years the entire wooden deck and coachroof has been renewed, with marine ply over laminated deck beams

Left: The Yanmar diesel was given a total overhaul and rebuild by Yanmar agents Cellar Marine in 2006, and has run about 50 hours since then.

The actual hull length is approximately 33' 6", with bowsprit and rudder and stern platform extending the overall length to about 39 ft. The hull is unusually fair for a ferro yacht, indicating a high quality original build, as does the use of weldmesh instead of chicken wire in the armature.

A good ferrocement hull is incredibly strong, and probably the lowest maintenance material in existence for a yacht hull.
