This yacht is one of the Alan Pape designed Ebbtide 33s, Ebbtides being one of the classic long-distance yachts, with a long full keel, transom-hung rudder for strength and ease of installation of a windvane. The hull and deck of this yacht were professionally built by Oceancraft in the early 1980s, and this hull has been slowly fitted out over the years by a professional engineer, with a lot of really top quality kit, and with priority given to strength, simplicity and ease of long-term maintenance. Although she is now complete and to all intents and purposes ready to be relaunched, she has never actually been sailed. She spent two years unused on a mooring in 1997-99, but has since then again been ashore.

Long keel with transom-hung rudder

Alan Pape, of the Curtis & Pape boatyard in Looe, Cornwall, designed the Ebbtide 33 and 36 yachts as heavyweight cruisers, aimed very much at long-distance sailing. Built of hard chine steel, with a short doghouse on a semi-flush deck, and a transom-hung rudder, Ebbtides have been built with sloop or cutter rigs.

This Ebbtide 33 has a cutter rig, and is fitted with an Aries windvane gear - like most of her equipment new and unused. The fitout is immensely strong, and aimed at allowing full access to every part of the hull for long-term maintenance and repair, although cosmetics have not been a priority.

The hull was built in 1982, the steel plating being on 2" x 1/4" steel frames at 500 mm spacing, with 3/4" diameter rods as chine stringers. Plating is 10 mm at keel base and stern, 6 mm on keel sides and 4 mm on topsides and deck. The plating was pre-primed, and has been finished with epoxy paints over which are chlorinated rubber topcoats.

The interior fitout makes extensive use of stainless steel, the saloon table, and the entire galley being finished in stainless steel sheeting. There is a large vee-double berth in the forecabin, with heads compartment and a (stainless steel finished) workbench, separating this from the saloon. Aft is galley and chart table, with a deep quarter berth aft of the chart table.

The Sabb 10 hp diesel has only a few hours running time. It has hand or electric start, and drives a variable pitch prop.

These Sabb diesels were in production for about 50 years, and are immensely long-lived and reliable.

The rudder blade is of heavy epoxy-saturated ply, and is transom hung on massive gudgeons and pintles. Stored off the boat is a new and unused Aries servo-pendulum wind vane gear self-steering unit. A small wind charger on a post at the stern keeps the batteries charged.

Built by Oceancraft at Wadebridge, the hull plating ranges from 10 mm at keel base to 4 mm on topsides and deck. The plating was pre-primed, and she is framed with 2" x 1/4" steel at the Lloyds recommended spacing of 500 mm, with 3/4" round chine stringers.

She was then epoxy-coated and finished with chlorinated rubber topcoating, with no filler whatever used on the hull.

She offers an immensely strong and well equipped ocean cruiser, with very little left to do to be ready to cruise. The fitout is practical and very strong, although not beautiful, with details such as toughened glass windows, 4" cockpit drains with backflow valves and heavy rigging. By modern standards she is under-engined, though a low-revving diesel driving a variable pitch prop should provide adequate auxiliary power. The sails are by Lucas, and are new and unused, in top quality ultra-soft 'Vectis' dacron cloth.
