A very solidly built small long-keeler with shallow draught, this being a very late example, with a beautifully finished interior. The accommodation is surprisingly good for her size. Although Dockrell Yachts closed down in around 1995, this yacht was not launched until 1997, and really is in lovely condition.

Keel type

Shallow iron winged fin keel with keel-hung rudder

The Dockrell 27 is one of a range of small cruising boats produced by Dockrell Yachts in the UK between the 1970s and 1995, mostly shallow draught. With her transom-hung rudder and attractive sheer she looks at first glance when afloat to be a Folkboat derivative, but underwater in fact has a shallower, longer iron keel and flatter bilges than Folkboat types.

The hull is the result of modifying the design of the underwater parts of the hull moulds of the Ian Anderson designed Hurley 27. The Dockrell version of this design has an iron wing keel with a widely flared base, to keep the ballast weight low, and to help her take the ground upright. Dockrells were strongly built, using fairly low-tech GRP construction methods.

Photographs mostly from 2005 when previously sold - but inspected again in February 2008, and still in superb condition, although in February 2008 the upholstery and other canvaswork was off the boat and stored away safely. The boat has been virtually unused for the last two years, mostly stored ashore.

Photos from 2005

The unusual long iron wing keel is shown here - the builders claimed that the yacht could sit upright safely supported only by the keel but few owners were brave enough to try this!

Most photos above are from 2005, when this boat was sold previously. This yacht is unexpectedly for sale now again due to a bereavement. We re-inspected this yacht in February 2008, and she remains in very good condition, although she is currently laid up with berth cushions, sails and sailcovers stored away from the boat.

The photos of the engine above, and those below, are from spring 2008. She is almost certainly the best Dockrell 27 you will find, with a lot of quality detail such as solid teak floorboards, self-tailing winches etc., as well as having a hull and deck in really good condition.
