While Contessa 32s are beautiful yachts, and a delight to sail, most are now getting old. This however is one of the very rare 'modern' Contessa 32s built since series production stopped in 1982. This one owner custom-finished example is in lovely condition, having had relatively light cruising use with only occasional club racing

The Contessa 32 was designed by David Sadler in 1970, and rapidly became very popular, both as a fast cruiser, and as a one design racing class. Series production by Jeremy Rogers Ltd. continued until 1982, by which time over 500 had been built. In 1996 Rogers once again started very limited series production - a new Contessa 32 from Rogers now costs over £130,000 for a basic boat.

The seaworthiness of Contessa 32s is legendary, and the stability curve of the C32 is regularly used by magazines as a benchmark by which to compare other yachts (everything else always showing up unfavourably)

This particular yacht is custom-built on a hull moulded by Bridgland Moulders of Norwich (who mould Oyster yachts, amongst others), and beautifully finished by M. J. Slack of Lowestoft, before final detailed fitting out by her present owner, a retired engineer. The hull was moulded with a double isopthalic gelcoat, with a first layer of powder-bound mat in isopthalic resin, and was externally coated with six coats of epoxy when new. It also has additional longitudinal stringers and strengthened chainplates compared to a 'standard' Rogers-built boat.

Photographs October 2006

The accommodation layout is essentially the same as a 'standard' Contessa 32, the only real variation being in the chart table having a full height bulkhead instead of the half-height one usually fitted, to give more space for instruments. In this yacht the chart table is set up to hold a laptop computer (removed) in addition to the colour chartplotter

Compared to a modern production 32-footer, the accommodation is small, but it is set up for serious seagoing, with strong handholds everywhere

The Perkins diesel has run approximately 740 hours, and has been regularly serviced by her engineer owner

The hull gelcoat is in very good condition, and all antifouling was removed, back to the epoxy coatings, before re-antifouling in October 2006

Traditionally, Contessa had a hawse pipe to an under-deck chain locker, but this yacht is fitted with a modern self-draining anchor locker isolated from the accommodation. She also has an oversized Profurl reefing gear for the genoa.

The rig is a keel-stepped one-piece Eurospars mast, with slab reefing for the main

If you are looking for a really high quality fast cruising yacht, built to sail rather than to sit in a marina, come and look at this Contessa....
