The year of build of this Halberdier 36 is not a misprint. Although Moodys stopped building Halberdiers in 1973, a few others were built later from the moulds by other builders, including this yacht in 1984. She is thus a remarkably young example of this still popular motor-sailer. This yacht is fully kitted out for Mediterranean cruising, down to charts and pilot books, and would be on her way there now except for the owners health problems.

The Halberdier 36 was designed for Moodys by Alan Hill, and was the first all-GRP yacht built by the yard. A total of 29 were moulded by Marcon (Marine Construction Ltd., Plymouth), and finished by Moodys, between 1967 and 1973. At that point Moodys stopped building the class, but mouldings were still available.

The Halberdier was designed as a true motor-sailer, with genuine sailing performance as well as a semi-enclosed wheelhouse and fairly powerful engine. Although most Halberdiers were ketch rigged, a sloop rig was an option. This yacht is ketch-rigged, with an extended foretriangle with a plank bowsprit.

Most Halberdiers had 35 hp Perkins engines, but this yacht has a larger engine, a 72 hp Perkins, with substantially increased tankage. Despite the 'motor sailer' tag, the Halberdier is a genuine sailing yacht, with a classic long keel hull form and a powerful rig.

The Halberdier has two heads compartments, the larger being between saloon and forecabin, with a shower. The other heads is an en suite heads in the aft cabin.

The aft cabin has standing headroom, and an en-suite heads compartment. The two single berths have an infill section which creates a very large double, whilst still leaving standing room. The Halberdier is well designed for long-term cruising, with lots of stowage.

Above: The Perkins diesel is larger than standard (72 hp instead of 35 hp) and , and has over twice the usual fuel tankage, at 180 gallons.

She has an extended foretriangle, with a plank bowsprit incorporating stowage for the main anchor, and roller reefing for both jib and staysail. Both main and mizzen masts have 'in-mast' reefing, these being Kemp Easyreef gears fitted in 1994.

This yacht was bought by the present owner one year ago, with the intention of basing her in the Mediterranean, for which she is fully equipped. He has however had to change his plans for health reasons.
