This Westerly Vulcan is a bilge-keeled version of the only large motor-sailer Westerly produced. With internal and external wheel steering and a powerful engine, she offers a massive amount of internal volume on a 34 foot hull. This 1982 boat is the bilge keel version, and has been fitted with a new Volvo 75 hp diesel in 2007. She has also been completely rewired, and had new instruments and autopilot installed. She is fitted with 'Sailtainer' in-boom reefing, and has a good inventory including a liferaft.

Keel type

Twin iron bilge keels with rudder on half skeg.

The Westerly Vulcan was designed by Laurent Giles, and introduced at the 1980 London Boat Show. Around 45 were built between 1980 and 1983/84. The Vulcan is a powerful motor-sailer with a fully enclosed deck saloon with second internal steering position. The design was aimed at producing an all-weather cruiser with a lot of living accommodation, and in that respect was very successful, although Vulcans were never the prettiest boat in Westerlys range.

The Vulcan was a radical departure for Westerly - and as it was clearly a very expensive boat to build, was probably never profitable. Vulcans were built with either iron fin keels with 4' 9" draught, or 4' 3" draught twin iron bilge keels.

The forecabin berths are 6' 5" long on the vee, and there is an infill to make a double.

The boat was originally in German ownership, hence the lettering on the panel (translates as "flares and spare anchor" ).

Level with the galley is the cabin that Westerly's advertising called the "owners cabin with double berth, dressing table and hanging locker", the berth extending under the forward part of the saloon below the internal helm position. The berth is about 77" x 42".

The chart table normally has a laptop with charting software, and VHF radio,
but these are stored ashore at present.

The original 60 hp engine and gearbox was replaced with a 75 hp Volvo D2-75 in 2007,
and fitted with a new 3-bladed Darglow feathering prop with ropecutter

She has a Sailtainer in-boom reefing system by Jeckells Sails

There is very little else quite like the Westerly Vulcan, a spacious motor-sailer with an internal steering position on a genuine sailing hull. This boat has had the major systems sorted out by her present owners, with new engine, gearbox and prop, plus rewiring and some new instrumentation and autopilot.
