A modern styled 26-footer from Rydgeway Marine, the Pegasus 800 is an attractive small cruiser with a well-finished interior. Nominally six berth, she is in fact much more practical for two to four. With six foot headroom, she has a surprising spacious and comfortable saloon. This is a well looked after example, quite recently re-engined with a Yanmar, which is for sale now as the long-term owner is aiming to buy larger.

Keel type

Iron fin keel with spade rudder

Built from1977 to the early 1990s by Rydgeway Marine, and later by Pegasus Yachts, the Pegasus 800 was designed by Gordon Harris. Rydgeway's boat names mostly started with a P - ie Pandora, Pirate, Prospect, Prelude and the Pegasus 700, 800 and 1100 models.

The Pegasus 800 hull was offered with choices of fin keel, twin bilge keels or centreboard, and a number of options were offered for the interior. The rig has a narrow high aspect main, and a large overlapping genoa.

She is a moderately fast boat for her size, and when reviewed by 'Practical Boat Owner' they commented ".... her helm was always light, and she remained sensitive without being over twitchy".

There is an enclosed forecabin, in which the heads is located, along with a sink moulded in to the starboard side inner GRP moulding. This forecabin can also be kitted out with bunk cushions, as shown here, to create two extra berths, though for most people the inconvenience of moving cushions to use the heads means that the forecabin is not used for berths, buts solely as a heads compartment. In this yacht the forward sink is not plumbed in, but this could easily be done if required.

The galley has a two-burner and grill gas cooker on a slide-out unit over the starboard quarterberth, with a sink moulded in to the starboard side of the companionway steps.

The Yanmar diesel was installed new in 2001, to replace the original Volvo engine. A new fuel tank was fitted in 2006. The main engine access, as seen here, is via a large hinge-up panel in the forward part of the cockpit sole, though there is also a small access hatch under the companionway.

The engine drives a 2-bladed folding prop on a V-bracket.

A 'camper' style cover with windows fits over the cockpit, though this was not on board when the photos were taken in January 2008 (owners photo)
