Lagoon were established in 1984 as an offshoot of Jeanneau, and initially specialised in racing monohulls and multihulls. Along with Jeanneau itself, the company was then absorbed into the CNB group, owners of Beneteau.

The first catamarans branded Lagoon were introduced in 1987, these being mostly large yachts aimed at the private market, but the next generation Lagoons, the 37 and 42, were very popular as charter boats.

The Lagoon 380 is one of the latest generation of Lagoons, these being built in both 'owners' and 'charter' versions. The boat was designed by Marc Van Peteghem & Vincent Lauriot Prévost, with interior design by Xavier Faÿ. The design philosophy aims at crew comfort, with lots of shade from the sun and interior space being maximised with vertical windows.

The Lagoon 380 is one of the most popular cruising catamaran models ever, with around 500 built to date. They are still in production, with a slightly modified interior with less timber to reduce costs.
