A long-keel classic, the Rustler 31 is sought after both as a fast coastal cruiser and as a long-distance passage-maker. The first owner of this Rustler 31 was reportedly Reg Freeman, who designed and built the well known Seadog ketches. It is possible that part of the original fit-out was done by his company. This example has had a recent full osmosis treatment, and has been re-engined with a Yanmar diesel.

Rustler 31 sailplan

The Rustler 31 was designed by Kim Holman in around 1964/65, and is generally regarded as a bigger version of his famous earlier Twister design, itself a development of the Folkboat type. Later a larger version was built, the Rustler 36. There is a definite family resemblance between these yachts, and they all share an excellent reputation for seaworthiness and all-weather speed. Rustler 31s have been built by a number of builders, including Ansteys, Maltings and Orion Marine.

Practical Boat Owner described the Rustler 31 thus - "....She exudes an air of rugged durability and inspires immediate confidence that she will behave predictably and correctly at all times, being easily handled by a small crew, yet weatherly and reasonably fleet of foot. There is a wonderful feeling of purposefulness and solid predictability that comes with a boat of moderate to heavy displacement - I would call it 'twitch resistance..."

The forecabin of this Rustler 31 has been modified slightly by making the vee-berth into a permanent double, instead of having a removable insert. A large hanging locker is opposite the heads compartment

Saloon table

The forward and chart table/galley bulkheads are lined with vinyl leatherette material, and in places fabric panels (possibly Indian) have been applied. The galley cupboards are painted in very bold colours - these panels unscrew and could be easily refinished in a more muted shade if required!

Deck - aft

The anchor windlass has been fitted well aft, with a chain pipe leading down to a large chain locker just forward of the heads on the port side. This has obviously been done to keep the weight of the considerable length of chain well aft and low. The main anchor stowed on the bow is a 45 lb genuine CQR. Other indications of a fit-out with distance passage-making in mind are the Hydrovane self-steering, heavy rigging and permantly fitted side boarding ladder.

Cockpit - forward
Rustler 31 cockpit

This Rustler 31 has obviously been set up for long-distance sailing, with Hydrovane self-steering, and really heavy ground tackle. Although in need now of some minor tidying up, all the basics are in very good order: the hull was very recently fully osmosis treated, she has an excellent Yanmar engine and good sails, plus a useful inventory.
