In the same very experienced ownership for 27 years, and extensively cruised, this bilge-keeled Konsort has had a brand new Bukh diesel fitted last year, and has recently had all headlinings renewed - by the same person who fitted them when the boat was new in 1979/80. She has also had the cabin windows replaced in toughened glass with new seals, and has a rig set up to allow easy lowering of the mast.

Westerly Konsort sailplan

The Westerly Konsort was designed by Laurent Giles as a mid-sized boat between the 26 foot Centaur and the Longbow/Berwick/Pentland 31 foot range. She was introduced in 1979, and remained in production until 1992/93, with over 800 built.

The Konsort rapidly overtook the larger boats in popularity, as with 15 inches more beam she offered virtually as much space in a cheaper package. From the mid-80s however, prices increased significantly, and by 1992 the boat was selling at over £50,000, and becoming uncompetitive with cheaper imports.

Early Westerly Konsorts were fitted with Volvo engines and a fold-down saloon table on the bulkhead, but, later boats had Bukh engines and a central fixed table.

As standard, the Konsort is a stiff boat that is often regarded as slightly undercanvassed in light winds, although overall she is not slow.

The standard Westerly Konsort accommodation plan below shows the heads sink as a pull-out sink above the WC: on this yacht the sink is fitted in the aft end of the hanging locker opposite the heads

With the saloon table folded up against the bulkhead, the Konsort has an enormous amount of interior space, thanks to the wide beam. In this boat, the open shelf on the starboard side has been boxed in to create extra lockers, in woodwork matching the existing galley lockers

There are minimal electronics on board, this suiting the personal choice of the owner

On deck, seen here with the mast lowering pivoting A-frame clamped to the shroud bases. With this rig, the mast, which has a pivot-pin heel fitting, can be lowered easily without a crane. The A-frame can be left in place underway if needed (eg when in rivers or canals) or can be removed completely during the season and used only at lay-up and re-launch times

The original mast and standing rigging were replaced 9 years ago with a new Isomat mast, with new S/S standing rigging. There is no roller gear for the headsail, the owner preferring twin side-by-side forestays so two hanked-on sails can be deployed, and if needed set together downwind.
