This yacht is a very non-standard Konsort, having been modified by her first owner to have ketch rig and an extended sugar-scoop type transom, plus fixed davits for a dinghy. She was featured some years ago in "Practical Boat Owner" magazine. Recently fitted with a new Yanmar 3YM diesel, and in only her second ownership, she is Part I registered and well equipped, including a near new Yanmar diesel, in-mast reefing on the main, cabin heating, dinghy and outboard, etc.

The Westerly Konsort was designed by Laurent Giles as a mid-sized boat between the 26 foot Centaur and the Longbow/Berwick/Pentland 31 foot range. She was introduced in 1979, and remained in production until 1992/93, with over 800 built.

The Konsort rapidly overtook the larger boats in popularity, as with 15 inches more beam she offered virtually as much space in a cheaper package. From the mid-80s however, prices increased significantly, and by 1992 the boat was selling at over £50,000, and becoming uncompetitive with cheaper imports.

Early Konsorts were fitted with Volvo engines and a fold-down saloon table on the bulkhead, but, later boats had Bukh engines and a central fixed table.

As standard, the Konsort is a stiff boat that is often regarded as slightly undercanvassed in light winds, although overall she is not slow. This particular boat has a mizzen added (with some interesting engineering to make this work with a tiller), and the stern extended into a small sugar scoop, to allow easier boarding from the water.

The saloon is relatively standard, although it looks from the forward bulkhead as though she may have been built with the original fold-down table. She now has the fixed central table with bottle storage of the later Konsorts, and a large cockpit table is stowed against the bulkhead

Originally fitted with a Bukh engine, she had a new Yanmar 3YM30 installed in 2007, which has run just 60 hours to date.

Above and right: The mizzenmast sits on a fabricated steel gantry to lift the mast base above the tiller, this framework also supporting fixed davits for the dinghy.

The extended sugar scoop transom has boarding steps built in. Whilst not affecting waterline length when static, the addition will slightly increase LWL when heeled, and may also marginally improve speed.

At the time the article in "PBO" was written, this yacht had both a gennaker and mizzen staysail in addition to main, genoa and mizzen, her current rig.

Based on a standard Westerly Konsort hull, this bilge-keeler offers an interesting and very practical small cruiser. Like all Konsorts, she has a very spacious interior, with the added advantage of a full canopy over the cockpit. A new 29 hp Yanmar diesel gives her plenty of reserve power, and in-mast reefing keeps handling simple.
