Classified advert - custom East Anglian class

"Alona" - a 'special' East Anglian class

Built by shipwright John May in 1970 for his own use, ‘Alona’ was built from East Anglian Mark II lofting plans in Gravesend. She is an unusual East Anglian in that the coach roof is long similar to that of a Sterling or Twister, rather than the characteristic doghouse of the Mk I.

In order to achieve the headroom required below an extra plank was laid in the topside to compensate. This has been achieved successfully without her looking boxy but giving the added benefit of a dry ride to windward in other than strong conditions.

The hull has been constructed entirely of Iroko in 2” wide strip planks on laminated oak frames giving a very fair hull. So much so that many people assume she is a GRP hull. Also this type of construction makes for a dry hull taking up very little water after wintering ashore. The keel has been cascovered in GRP up to 200mm above the iron keel/wood joint. This has conserved the keel bolts over time.

John May sold the boat to my father in 1971 to fund a new boat building project for a larger yacht. She has been in our family ownership and maintenance since.

We have made some improvements over the years. The Volvo 2002 diesel replaced an unwilling marinised Wortham Blake petrol engine in 1987. The original mast head rig was changed for a larger fractional rig in 2000 with the help of sailmaker Colin Anstey (Gowen). All halyards are now led back to the cockpit. The bigger rig has transformed her performance on all points of sail. This year she came 3rd in class and 14th overall out of 60 classic Bermudian boats at the 2007 SYH classic regatta.

Some modifications have also been made to the interior as well to improve the impression of spaciousness she has below, seat backs have been raked for comfort. She is a very simple boat with a fold down chart table/box which takes a half sized admiralty charts. She has 2 excellent full length sea berths (6’6”) with lee cloths. The forepeak berths are also generous length with an infill which could easily create a good double berth with hawser pipe removed. Headroom is very good throughout the boat with standing headroom in the loo, unusual for this size of boat.

We have cruised up and down the East coast every year and trips to France and Belgium occasionally. Currently berthed and now ashore at REYC Upnor, Kent.
