The Dehler 36 CWS is a fast cruiser-racer designed specifically to be manageable by a small crew. The CWS designation stands for "central winch system", having sheets, halliards and reefing lines led back to a powerful single electric winch in the centre of the cockpit. The system looks complex but works well. Although this boat is on the Isle of Man, this is easily reached by air from most parts of the UK.

Heinz & Willi Dehler started building boats in 1963, initially dinghies and small trailer-sailers, but in the 1980s expanded into building larger cruising yachts, becoming for a time the largest builder in Germany.

The company was an early exponent of GRP construction, and became known for technical innovation and high build quality. Dehlers have always been relatively expensive boats, and Dehler Yachts suffered badly from the 2008 recession. In early 2009 the company became insolvent, and was taken over by Hanse (who also now own the British Moody brand)

The Dehler 36 CWS was introduced in 1988. Designed by Van de Stadt, the boat is aimed at providing high performance with relative ease of handling. She has a fairly big rig, but with a self-tacking headsail and powerful electric winch she can be managed with a small crew. About 800 were built, with various interior trim options, the 'Top' model designation meaning additional deck gear and hatches. 'Yachting Monthly' describe the design as "....exceptionally well engineered and put together".

The interiors of Dehlers 36's had several options, but most variants had extensive areas of GRP mouldings. This example started life as one with a very plain GRP/aluminium interior, but in her first ownership additional timber trim, including the bulkheads was added to enhance the interior.

As built, the area aft of the forecabin had a built-in washbasin to starboard, plus hanging locker space to port. In 2001 the washbasin was removed to create a sail bin for spinnaker, cockpit cushions, spare anchor and warps etc., as seen below, though the washbasin is still available and could be reinstated if required.

The saloon headroom is 6' 2" to 6' 3",
and the settee seating in the saloon converts to a double berth seven feet in length and 54" wide.
The forecabin berths are eight feet long on each "vee"

The aft cabin berth is 6' 10" long and 5' 6" wide at the forward end,
with 5' 11" headroom in the forward area of the cabin.

The hull is solid GRP below the waterline, with a cast iron keel bolted into a moulded 'spigot' recess in the hull moulding. Above the waterline and on deck the mouldings are balsa sandwich, with extensive removable sub-mouldings on deck to cover the control lines led aft from the mast. The deck has TBS non-slip

The self-tacking jib sheets to a curved track just forward of the mast. All lines from the mast are led back under covering mouldings to the cockpit, giving very clear decks

Below: The CWS or "Central Winch System" station is just in front of the wheel, with virtually every line led back through banks of clutches to the very powerful electric Lewmar 43 self-tailing winch, which has three press-buttons for operation. There are also two smaller manual self-tailing winches outboard for spinnaker sheets. The deck systems are very well engineered, and although initially seeming complex, work well in practice.

This yacht was bought by her very experienced fourth owner in late 2008, after a good survey, and some new equipment added. She is for sale now as he is finding that she is too much for him to cope with safely singlehanded, as although in his seventies he does at times sail on his own.
