The Southerly 100 was introduced in 1983, being a slightly updated version of the 1979 Dick Carter Southerly 95, itself a development of the original John Bennett designed Southerly 28 from 1974.

The late Dick Carter ran a US-based yacht design and production company called Carter Offshore, the staff of which included Doug Peterson, Chuck Paine, and Yves-Marie de Tanton, all of whom later went on to set up their own highly regarded design businesses. Carter Offshore mostly designed racing boats, some of them very successful indeed, including the drop keel "Red Rooster" which won the Fastnet Race in 1969.

Southerlys are renowned for their ability to float “on a damp lawn” and with the keel raised by a hydraulic ram she only draws 1’ 10”, but with the keel down she draws a healthy 5’10” and can give a good account of herself to windward. The inevitably shallow rudder can however sometimes cause poor control offwind in a large quartering sea - a price many owners are happy to pay for the frequent advantages of very shallow draught.

The wedge-shaped drop keel sits in a massive steel grounding plate, which not only protects it but also acts as a substantial contribution to the ballast. Southerlys are still in production, though the smallest model is now the Southerly 32 at around £200,000. Current Southerlys have deeper keels and twin rudders to enhance performance and control.

The galley and a quarterberth are to port, and the navigation area and interior steering position to starboard, with steps down to the saloon table and settees. The port side of the seating converts to a double berth by dropping the table. The forecabin has two separate berths.

The cast iron drop keel is housed inside a very substantial cast "upside down turtle" shaped iron grounding plate , the edges of which can just be seen in the photo above.

The keel is raised by a manual hand pump and lowered by turning a valve. An indication of the keel position can be seen through a viewing window in the galley moulding.

In the present ownership since 2006, this yacht is only for sale now due to health reasons. With an electrically operated lift keel, roller reefing on both main and genoa, and interior or exterior wheel steering, this is a very versatile and easy to handle yacht, with the huge advantage of very shallow draught when required.
