Michael Herrmann reportedly built a number of similar yachts at a small shipyard in Kiel. In their ownership it arrived in the UK, where it was purchased by the present owner in 2002, after Mr. Herrmann became ill. In present ownership she has been cruised around the west coasts of the UK and Ireland, and has for a time also been used as a liveaboard. She was surveyed for insurance purposes in 2011.

Plan Yachtsnet

The German designer Kurt Reinke designed a series of yachts for construction in hard-chine and multi-chine steel from 1972, through the 1980s and 1990s. This yacht is shown on plans as a 17.5M "Super-Hydra II", and appears to be an slightly modified version of the 16M design seen here.

Reinke designs almost all have the characteristic upper chine forming a tumblehome to the deck as in this yacht, with hull ports set into this section, whilst there is also a large deckhouse. The tumblehome will increase ultimate stability. We do not have the design specifications for the scantlings of this yacht, but on the recent survey it appeared from ultrasonic tests that the topsides were 6mm steel, and 8mm on the lower plating, with minimal thickness loss from these measurements.

There is a double forecabin, and aft of this is a lower saloon, with a heads compartment and a two-berth "Pullman" passage cabin.

The saloon and galley are separated by a counter and overhead shelving. The yacht has hot-water central heating radiators, which can be heated either by a Webasto diesel heater or by gas boiler.

The steps down to the saloon, galley and forward cabins are by the interior helm position.
Headroom in the wheelhouse/deck saloon is 6' 2", with about 6' 8" headroom below in the galley
and lower saloon.

At the aft end of the deck saloon/wheelhouse are steps down to the
aft cabin and aft heads, and the door to the cockpit.

The aft cabin has a double berth 6' 6" long and 5' 10" wide, and extensive storage.
Forward of this is an aft heads and shower compartment

The engine room is under the wheelhouse/deck saloon, with two Iveco 4-cylinder diesels,
and a Westerbeke diesel generator inside the red casing. The Iveco main engines have
run approx 1,240 hours.
