This is a very impressive fast cruiser, combining obvious speed with very good and well-fitted accommodation. Like many 1970s/80s cruiser-racers, the boat has a high ballast ratio and does not rely on crew weight for stability. In the same very experienced ownership from new, this yacht has cruised extensively around the UK and Mediterranean. She was totally rerigged about 14 years ago, with a new in-mast furling mast and boom, and at the same time had the original engine and gearbox replaced with a new Yanmar. The lead keel was removed and rebedded in 2008.

Keel type

Deep lead fin keel with rudder on partial skeg

Alex Stuart designed and built the Stuart 37 as a cruiser-racer, some boats being fitted out as racers, with up to ten berths, and a more spartan interior, and others, as in this example, as cruisers, with fewer berths, but two heads.

The hull has a deep lead keel with the rudder on a partial skeg, and a Saildrive leg well forward. The hull form has significant tumblehome (rarely seen on modern yachts as it makes the hulls expensive to build) and the moderately wide beam gives good accommodation. Unlike modern boats, the beam does not go right to the transom, so she will not have the ill-effects this places on handling.

Whilst the interior is pure cruiser, on deck her racing heritage shows up, with clean open decks, a very low-profile wedge coachroof, and big winches. The original mast with a battened mainsail was replaced with an in-mast furling rig from Eurospars/Sparcraft and North Sails, with the boom extended slightly to give back the mainsail area lost in roach. She remains a powerful fast cruiser, but now with very easy sail handling.

The forecabin berths, each 6 ft long, are on hinge-up pipe-cot style frames, to allow the very substantial storage below to be used. The steel bar is the tie-rod to take the load of the baby stay.

Saloon headroom is about 5' 10".

The port aft cabin has an en-suite heads, whilst the starboard aft cabin is slightly smaller, as the galley extends aft to starboard. Both aft cabins have double berths 6' 6" by 4' 0" at the forward end, two opening ports, and extensive lockers.

The aft cabins are separated by the width of the cockpit well, and internal lockers, so there is good sound insulation between the two aft cabins.

The original engine was replaced with a new Yanmar 3GM30C with Yanmar saildrive in 1996, the engine hours to date being about 500. The Saildrive unit has a Gori folding prop

The lead keel was removed and rebedded in 2008

The entire rig was changed in 1997, with a new in-mast furling mast.

A slightly longer boom was fitted to allow the loss of sail area from the old roached mainsail to be compensated for. New sails from North were purchased at the same time.

In the photographs above the lower shrouds have been taken off the aft chainplates and temporarily attached to the cap shroud chainplates, to allow a winter cover to be put over the cockpit and aft part of the boat.

The ring on the wheel is for attachment of the control lines for the Neptune servo-pendulum windvane steering gear, which although part of the inventory, is not currently mounted on the transom.

The aft deck has a bin for lifebuoy storage, and two lockers, a circular one aft for fenders etc., and a larger one under the aft cockpit seat with storage for an outboard - this lifting lid also conceals the engine controls. There is also a very large locker under the cockpit floor, big enough for an inflatable dinghy, which is accessed from the interior aft of the galley.

This is a fast passage-maker with a very good cruising interior, set up for easy short-handed sailing. In the present ownership from new, she has cruised from Scotland to the length of the Mediterranean. The hull condition is very good - she has always been wintered ashore. She is for sale now only because the owners is looking to downsize slightly.
