The Rustler 36 is a traditional and very elegant long-distance cruiser, with excellent build quality and sea-keeping ability. This yacht was moulded in 1997, and fitted out to a very high standard by MB Yachts - with a non-standard layout with superb joinery. She was launched in 2002, and has been extremely well cared for since by her sailmaker owner. Engine hours to date are just 256, and a new Rustler 36 from Rustler Yachts approaching a similar spec. today would cost around £200,000.

The Rustler 36 was designed by Holman and Pye over 20 years ago as a seaworthy "go-anywhere" long-distance fast cruiser. She is a bigger, faster development of Holman's earlier "Stella" design, itself essentially a Folkboat derivative. The Rustler 36 has a longish fin keel, relatively narrow beam, and extreme elegance. For their length, the accommodation is not as spacious as beamier yachts, but the loss of volume is, for most owners, more than made up for in their sailing ability, especially in heavy weather.

Although Rustler 36s were originally designed to be tiller-steered, most new boats are now supplied with the optional wheel steering. This yacht has wheel steering, with a modified cockpit layout allowing more lockers and a larger wheel, plus a bow-thruster to aid marina manoeuvring

From the companionway bulkhead forward, the saloon layout is generally similar (though not identical) to a standard Rustler factory-fitted boat, although the joinery has some custom detailing such as contrasting inlay, and Corian worktops in galley and heads

Above: The forecabin is the main sleeping cabin, with more lockers than standard, and hot-air heating

The heads compartment has a Corian countertop, and a ducted heating outlet

Below: The table frame is offset, to allow easier passage forward when the starboard table leaf is down

The major alteration from the standard layout is the removal of the quarterberth - instead this yacht has much more cockpit locker space, plus a huge wet locker aft of the chart table, behind a zipped canvas cover. This locker is warmed by the engine heat

The Yanmar diesel has run approx 250 hours from new - seen here winterised

"She is in no way old fashioned. The combination of the sharply raked transom and cutaway forefoot means that the foot of her keel is actually little more than 25% of her overall length, a compromise assuring good manoeuvrability with plenty of directional stability"

"..... the Rustler 36 is one of the nicest serious cruising yachts we've sailed aboard for years". Five years on, I can confirm that she not only remains worthy of that accolade, she's even better."

Photographed in January 2007 on a very wet, windy day, it was not practical to uncover the decks. She has a cream deck/coachroof moulding, with glued 10mm laid teak decks and cockpit seating. She is wheel steered with a 40" custom Edson wheel, and a Lewmar 3.0 Kw bow thruster powered by a separate battery. There is both a Hydrovane vane gear self-steering, plus a linear drive autopilot

Additional external photos April 2008

She offers an exceptionally high quality and 'low mileage' example of a Rustler 36, with just about every possible option that could be fitted, including some that are not even on Rustler Marine's option list!
