The Westerly Discus was a development of the Westerly 33 hull design, and built in two versions. The "centre cockpit" Discus was essentially a Westerly 33 with a walkthrough to the aft cabin in place of a cockpit hatch, but the "bridgedeck version" had a different deck moulding with the cockpit right aft, and a broad bridgedeck at the forward end of the cockpit, under which was access to the aft cabin with offset double berth. The first Discuses had sapele mahogany joinery, later yachts having teak.

Whereas the Westerly 33s were all ketch rigged, most Discuses were sloop rigged, with ketch as an option. The move towards sloop rig had much to do with the availability of reliable genoa roller reefing gears, making sloop rigs much more manageable.

Discuses were generally fitted either with Mercedes or Volvo 36 hp diesels. They are a classic solid cruiser, with a good record of long-distance cruising.

This yacht is the more popular bridgedeck version, and sloop rigged, with the Mercedes engine, and has recently had a very comprehensive refit.

This yacht has had the headlining ( a virtually universal problem in older Westerlys ) professionally renewed throughout. Refitted for his own use by a very experienced working sailing instructor, she is now for sale only because he does not have time to make full use of her.

Accommodation plan from Westerly brochure - photos August 2008

The central saloon has 6' 3" headroom, although headroom is lower forward and
in the 'walkthrough' to the aft cabin by the chart table.

Engine access is good, with normal checks via a lift out panel under the companionway, but with additional access to the gearbox and sternshaft from the aft cabin

Bought by the present owner two years ago after a good hull survey, she has since had major upgrading and updating of equipment, including being totally rewired and re-headlined throughout. This really is a very good example of one of these yachts.
