The X-402 is a stylish fast cruiser-racer, one of the many such designs from X-Yachts of Denmark. Like all X-Yachts, the 402 is rigged and equipped for racing, which means good quality deck gear that actually works well, yet fitted out as a comfortable but fast cruiser. She has a twin double aft cabin layout. Price substantially reduced as the owner now needs to sell...

X-Yachts was established in Denmark in 1979, and quickly developed a reputation for fast cruisers that could also win races. Some models, such as the X99, of which 600 were built, have established themselves as popular club racing one-designs, whilst the larger models such as this 1985 X-402 remain popular as fast cruisers which can still give all-out racers some competition on the racecourse. Designed by Neils Jeppesen in 1984, the X-402 hull was used for a one-off pure racer which won the One Ton Cup in 1986. About 80 X-402s were built between 1984 and 1990, production yachts being offered with a choice of fractional rig (as in this example) or masthead rig.

Photographs mostly from August 2007

Two small windows in the hull bottom allow a visual check for weed on the folding prop

Interior photographs August 2007

The heads and a forepeak - currently used solely for sail and gear stowage - are forward

The Volvo diesel is under the stowage/worktop box by the galley, with very good access once this box is hinged up to the deckhead

Photographs August 2007

Each of the two mirror-image aft cabins has a double berth and a small locker and seating area

The X-402, although with a fully fitted cruising interior, is very definitely a performance yacht on the light displacement side

The three-spreader fractional rig has runners. Standing rigging is rod

She offers a cruising boat which can make fast passages, and also give a good account of herself in club racing.
