The Southerly 100 is a Dick Carter design, one of the few really shallow draught modern yachts available. She has a pilot house with interior steering, and a cast iron ballast plate protecting the keel and bottom when grounding. This 1997 example is the last but one of the 96 Southerly 100s built, and is in extremely good condition.

The Southerly 100 was introduced in 1983, being a slightly updated version of the 1979 Dick Carter Southerly 95, itself a development of the original John Bennett designed Southerly 28 from 1974. The Southerly 100 had a very long production run, from 1983 to 1997, with minor modifications and improvements as time went on.

Southerlys are renowned for their ability to float “on a damp lawn” and with the keel raised by the electrically powered hydraulic ram she only draws 1’ 10”, but with the keel down she draws a healthy 5’10” and can give a good account of herself to windward.

The wedge-shaped drop keel sits in a massive steel grounding plate, which not only protects it but also acts as a substantial contribution to the ballast. Southerlys are still in production, and though for a while they dropped production of models under 35 ft, market demand has recently led them to reintroduce a 32-footer, though of different design to the Southerly 100.

Photographs April 2010

The cast-iron drop keel is raised and lowered by an electrically powered hydraulic ram, which lifts the keel via a series of pulleys with kevlar rope. If the electrics fail, the keel can also be raised via a manual pump handle. The whole keel mechanism is integrated into a large iron grounding plate on which the boat sits when aground, the mast support also being tied in to this structure. The keel itself weighs 1,623 lbs, with a further 2,774 lbs in the iron grounding plate.

This is an exceptionally good example of these versatile cruisers. Most of the Southerly 100s around are substantially older, and few can have been as well looked after as this yacht. She is very comprehensively equipped, including bowthruster, wind generator, heating, radar/chartplotter, cockpit enclosure etc.
